Instagram: The 1 social media app that accounts for 90% of my social media usage

I’m a productivity junky, but I also like keeping up with people in my life (#human). However, I hate wasting too much time on my phone. I typically have social media installed for social events or when I’m bored. But usually what tends to happen:

I consume content 98% of the time and only create content 2% of the time.

To counteract this, I’d uninstall social media periodically to prevent me from wasting so much time on there. Now I recently had a conversation with a friend where I explained this, and he helped me reframe the problem. He said:

Instead of uninstalling social media all the time, why not unfollow accounts that suck your attention through meaningless content?

This never occurred to me, but it made total sense. “Okay, bet. I’ll try that.” Here’s what happened:

I took my ‘following’ on Instagram from 1,300+ to ~450. I realized how many accounts I followed that:

  • Don’t post content
  • Post content that I could care less about
